Following the Army’s abandonment of the fort, the remains of most non-Apaches buried there were removed to the federal cemetery at Santa Fe, New Mexico. Apache burials were not disturbed and the cemetery continues to be occasionally used by the local community. (click photo to enlarge)
Travel to Fort Apache
Fort Apache is located approximately 4 miles south of Whiteriver, Arizona, ½ mile east of Arizona Highway 73.
From Show Low/Pinetop-Lakeside take AZ 260 east to Hon-Dah Resort, turning right (south) on to AZ 73. Follow Highway 73 about 25 miles, turning left (east) on Fort Apache Road 4 miles south of the town of Whiteriver.
From Globe, follow US 60 north approximately 60 miles to the western end of AZ 73 at Carrizo Junction. Turning right onto AZ 73 at the Fort Apache and Whiteriver signs, and continue on the state highway 25 miles, turning right at Fort Apache Road. The park is located ½ mile east of AZ 73.
